I have found the major airlines and hotel chains will retain you points if you buy points once a year, usually 1000 points, for approximately $10-$15. Or have another transaction. I have a calendar entry or 3 reminding me to do so. That transaction can be a charge on the vendor's credit card. Some hotels and at least jetBlue points never expire!
