Twitter says account hack warnings, password resets were sent in error
UPDATED -- Twitter users took to the service late Monday evening to say that they'd been told hackers had attempted to access their accounts, and that Twitter was forcing them to update their passwords. At 1 a.m. ET, Twitter told me that reset notices were sent by accident.
"We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error," said Twitter's Jim Prosser in an email. "We apologize for the error."
It's unclear how many users were impacted, but judging from the flurry of frustrated Tweets, the number was substantial
Many Twitter users are receiving this mesage.
"You guys should check your emails. Apparently a lot of Twitter accounts have been hacked tonight," wrote a Twitter user from Brooklyn.
"Was just notified that my Twitter account was possibly hacked," wrote user Tony Sauls, in another message. "Didn't see anything sketchy upon review, but let me know if you see anything."
The emails received by targets of the apparent attack say that Twitter has reset the recipient's password.
"Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter," reads one of the emails, which I viewed. "We've reset your password to prevent others from accessing your account. You'll need to create a new password.
