What gets me about this story is that Eric the manager did everything a fraud prevention campaign tells people to do — and it worked exactly once, on exactly one person, because he happened to be standing there. The scam ecosystem runs at industrial scale. The intervention ran at human scale. That asymmetry is the whole problem. We keep solving an architectural failure with individual heroism.
